The Rose Garden at the Woodland Park Zoo

Woodland Park Rose Garden offers a wonderful setting for flower lovers. Stroll through 2.5 acres of formal landscape and enjoy nearly 3000 roses representing over 200 different varieties. The large variety of roses blend elegantly with the garden’s formal architectural design to create a memorable showcase landscape.

We'll meet at the entrance to the Rose Garden at 10:00. Lunch after at Tutta Bella, 4411 Stone Way N, Seattle, 98103.

Bring your own morning beverage or buy a coffee at EWC’s Common Grounds coffee bar. Let’s meet in the Banquet Room where we can get to know one another while enjoying the magnificent waterfront view.

After coffee, you’re on your own to have lunch in the Banquet Room (you can sign up for the lunch program), buy a snack at Common Grounds, and/or take a walk along the waterfront. Seals and sea lions have been spotted recently! You may even want to take a ferry ride to Kingston on a nice day. Walk on fees are $5.10 for seniors (65 & over), $10.25 for younger folks.

Curious Minds | Chittenden Locks Tour

The Ballard Locks are the nation’s busiest locks system, connecting the salt water of Puget Sound with the fresh waters of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. It is fascinating to watch boats of all sizes raised or lowered to match the water levels. We can see the Locks in action during our guided tour. The tour will also include the 21-step fish ladder, which helps. migrating salmon navigate upstream. An underwater viewing gallery allows you to watch the fish swim. In June the primary salmon returning through the Locks is Sockeye.

There is a short optional film run on request in the theater next to the visitors center. You can choose to see this before or after the tour. We will meet at the Visitors Center a little before 1 pm for the tour.

Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park

Join your fellow Newcomer hikers on June 18 as we venture over to the Kitsap Peninsula for a hike in the woods at Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park. Port Gamble is one of Washington’s oldest non-Native settlements and it appears that you might just be in New England! The town was settled by two Maine lumbermen, Andrew Pope and William Talbot, who, with partners Josiah Keller and Charles Foster, formed the Puget Mill Company. Due to a shortage of lumber workers in the area, they recruited mill workers from Maine, and constructed buildings in the New England style of the time to help ward off homesickness. Eventually, the mill recruited workers from the local S’Klallam tribe, and became a source of lumber worldwide. This mill became the longest continuously working lumber mill in North America. When it closed in 1995, it had been in operation for 142 years. In 1966, Port Gamble was declared a National Historical Landmark.

Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park is located just outside of the historic village, 15 minutes from the Kingston Ferry terminal, and has an extensive network of multi-use trails. There are over 60 miles of trails and forest roads in the woods traversing ~3900 acres. The singletrack and dirt paths travel through the dense Pacific Northwest forest. We'll walk Secret Squirrel and Beaver Trail loops, a total of approximately 5.25 miles, which should take approximately 2 hours to complete. For anyone who wants a shorter walk, there is a simple "bail out option" down a main forest road back to the car park, making a 2.5 mile loop. Hopefully the foxglove and other wildflowers will be blooming in profusion at this time; if so, we have an option to take a trail through a former clear-cut area to make the most of the show, which would extend the distance to 5.4 miles. Elevation gain is approximately 500 feet; most of the trail is gentle, with one short section of switchbacks going up and a short steep downhill section. Some hikers may want to use poles for these brief sections. Boots are not essential, but trail shoes with a good sole are strongly recommended, particularly if it has been wet.

After the hike, we have the option to have lunch at Butcher and Baker Provisions in town. They serve coffees, delicious homemade cakes/cookies/pastries, breakfasts salads, sandwiches, and entrees, and have indoor and covered outdoor seating. The portions can be large, but everything is delicious.

The town of Port Gamble is very quaint with some lovely gift and art shops, a small museum, theater, wedding venue and cemetery. There are also incredible views across Gamble Bay and Hood Canal, where the occasional Navy ship/sub or whale can be spotted. A walk around the town from the Butcher and Baker parking lot is approximately 0.5 miles.

Note: A ferry is required for this event! Preferred option is Washington State Ferries Edmonds-to-Kingston departing at 8:50 am, arriving at approximately 9:20. This should get walkers to the trailhead around 9:45.

This Mah Jongg group meets twice monthly, on 1st and 3rd Thursdays (except holidays) from10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

All levels are welcome to join! We'll usually have willing teachers available.
Third Place Commons is a casual public space without advance table reservations. We'll choose our tables and play first come, first served, with a limit of 12 players. Bring your Mah Jongg set if you have one!
Food and beverages are also no-host. Bring your own or purchase from the Bakery or other restaurants located in the Commons area.

Please join Tracy and her husband for an Elliott Bay cruise across the Sound to Poulsbo. After docking, enjoy a seafood lunch and explore charming boutiques and shops, taking in this picturesque, historic town. The cruise back to Seattle may include motoring around some of the islands and maybe if lucky, a whale sighting.

What to bring:

Layers, it can be cold when cruising across the sound

Sensible shoes for a boat
Snacks/drinks and only what you can carry. Travel cups only, no glass. Drinks, including wine should be stored in a metal or plastic travel container with a top that screws shut.

There is no bathroom on the boat. Bathrooms are located at the marina and docks at Poulsbo. Boat cruising time is about 1 1/2 hours each way.

The boat has life vests but members are welcome to bring their own.

NOTE: Members must be able to navigate a steep dock ramp and be able to step from the dock over the side of the boat. Both the ramp and boat may gently rock as you walk on the ramp or board the boat. There will be no one to assist with getting on and off the boat.

Members are asked to be at the marina by 10:45 am so the boat can leave promptly at 11:00 am. World Cup matches are scheduled at noon so it is strongly encouraged to take traffic into account.

Members will meet at the Freedom Boat Club located at Dock 1 (EAST 412). This is the southern most dock closest to city. Members may call Tracy Varley at (505) 400-3889 if they cannot locate Dock 1.

Two dates for this trip are offered. Due to limited capacity, members may only sign up for one date.

This event is weather dependent. If a small craft marine warning is issued, the event may be cancelled.

Our optional theme for the month: Lost and Found!

Storytelling Salon is an interest group for members to socialize and share stories with one another. We start with a happy hour with hors d’oeuvres and beverages (bring your favorite to share), and then we move into our stories. Whether you prefer to read your story or present it without notes, you’ll have an opportunity to share whatever your heart desires, including tales of lost love, wild times, and strange people! We offer optional writing prompts each month.

Fashioned after The Moth events, speakers have just five minutes to present. But instead of voting for winners (which happens at The Moth events), listeners just offer up their compliments about content, craft, and delivery. This is not about critique or competition; rather, our group thrives on respect, support and encouragement, and having a safe space. We are genuinely interested in strengthening friendships and hearing each other. And having fun!

These events are held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6pm. We generally meet in person from May through October and on Zoom from November through April. Unless otherwise noted, we meet in the private dining room of Bellevue Towers. Participants gather outside the building at 505 106th Avenue NE, at the red art sculpture, for access to the building at 6:00 pm.

Members are encouraged to attend in person during the summer season because that’s the best way to build a sense of camaraderie. But if health, travel, or work obligations preclude in-person attendance, arrangements can be made for you to call in on Zoom. Please notify Gail Kretchmer at least 24 hours in advance if you need to access Zoom.

Social Bridge for players who have a little bit of knowledge of the game. We have lots of fun connecting with friends and enjoying the game. Keeping score is just to keep us on track. If we have an odd number of players, we rotate every 4 games.

Come join us for some gardening as we work with a staff gardener to preserve and beautify this gem in southern Seattle. We will have a short private tour in advance of the work event to learn about the history of the Garden (or other topics of interest) and provide context for the volunteer effort. All equipment, tools and gloves will be provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Exact tasks will be determined by the gardener but could be a range of garden maintenance projects, likely weeding or mulching garden beds. If you like, bring a sack lunch and we can have lunch together in the garden after the event. There are several picnic tables.

What to bring:

Layers, it can be cold when cruising across the sound

Sensible shoes for a boat
Snacks/drinks and only what you can carry. Travel cups only, no glass. Drinks, including wine should be stored in a metal or plastic travel container with a top that screws shut.

There is no bathroom on the boat. Bathrooms are located at the marina and docks at Poulsbo. Boat cruising time is about 1 1/2 hours each way.

The boat has life vests but members are welcome to bring their own.

Members are asked to be at the marina by 10:45 am so the boat can leave promptly at 11:00 am. World Cup matches are scheduled at noon so it is strongly encouraged to take traffic into account.

Members will meet at the Freedom Boat Club located at Dock 1 (EAST 412). This is the southern most dock closest to city. Members may call Tracy Varley at (505) 400-3889 if they cannot locate Dock 1.

Two dates for this trip are offered. Due to limited capacity, members may only sign up for one date.

This event is weather dependent. If a small craft marine warning is issued, the event may be cancelled.

“It’s a Small World After All”

Join Newcomers friends and guests to enjoy art created by two of our own, Helena Puche and Carolyn McConnell with Sofia Grajal-Puche. Helena has been working on a series of Children of the World painted with bold acrylics, that capture the universal joy, innocence, and shared bonds of children across different cultures, conveying a profound hope for our collective future. Added textured paper on the canvas represents a physical element that acts as her artistic signature.

Carolyn balances this human presence with quiet, grounding force of nature in fluid watercolor. Her paintings of trees capture the delicate, organic structures of our shared environment. "I love painting trees. They are living and breathing thereby connecting with all of us around the globe," she said. Conversely, Sofia’s acrylic landscapes channel the raw, pulsing life force of the earth, using dynamic textures to convey kinetic energy.

Together, these collections reflect a world where quiet moments in nature exist in perfect balance with dynamic, living energy and the hopeful spirit of the next generation.

The Art Show is at the Edmonds Waterfront Centre (EWC). If you have time, stay for coffee and a sweet or ice cream after you view the exhibit, in the comfortable EWC setting where drinks and treats are available from Common Grounds.

We will be at the center for any questions between 1-3 pm, July 1.

All levels are welcome to join! We'll usually have willing teachers available.
Third Place Commons is a casual public space without advance table reservations. We'll choose our tables and play first come, first served, with a limit of 12 players. Bring your Mah Jongg set if you have one!

Curious Minds | The Museum of Flight (Docent-Led Tour)

The centerpiece of this experience is a docent-led tour of The Museum of Flight, which will feature museum highlights and a few stories about some of the women and men who have contributed to the progress of aviation and astronomy.

After the tour is completed, explore the museum further on your own, enjoy some food in the cafeteria, or meet up for lunch offsite in Georgetown. A reminder that your ticket is valid for same-day Museum reentry, even if you depart the campus for a break. . . but remember to leave your ticket wristlet on!

Note: The tour will traverse the breadth of the museum, with a combination of standing and walking (on stairs and ramps) over the duration of an hour; the Museum does offer elevators and wheelchair lifts as needed.

About the Museum: The Museum of Flight is the largest independent, non-profit air and space museum in the world! With over 130 aircraft and spacecraft, tens of thousands of artifacts, millions of rare photographs, dozens of exhibits and experiences and a world-class library, the Museum and its people bring humankind's incredible history of flight to life.

Back by popular demand, we are offering another opportunity to explore the historic Smith Tower, Seattle's first “skyscraper”, followed by happy hour and exceptional views of the city in the Observatory Bar.

All levels are welcome to join! We'll usually have willing teachers available.
Third Place Commons is a casual public space without advance table reservations. We'll choose our tables and play first come, first served, with a limit of 12 players. Bring your Mah Jongg set if you have one!

Chamber Music at Volunteer Park

The Seattle Chamber Music Society is a local gem, providing year-round concerts that bring world class musicians from around the world to Seattle to create music together. Besides their year-round concerts, they sponsor a chamber group in residence, an academy for talented students, bring music programs into the schools, and have a concert truck that goes to schools and neighborhoods across the county and state.

Please feel free to bring a picnic supper and the drink of your choice, noting that alcohol cannot be on display at a public park. There will be a food truck if you prefer.

Dress comfortably, remembering it gets chilly when the sun goes down.

We will be sitting on the lawn. It is “byo” chair, and/or blankets unless you wish to sit on the grass! Bring low backed outdoor seats to avoid blocking sightlines. We’ll try to have some blankets spread out.

Engage for Change | White Center Food Bank (Monday, August 10, 2026)

White Center Food Bank

Volunteers will be assisting the White Center Food bank, working in the warehouse or supporting customers in the grocery store. On average, the food bank serves 350 families daily. Support in the warehouse may include restocking as customers shop, sorting donated food, or other tasks to keep the warehouse clean and well organized. Volunteers in the grocery store will support customers directly by helping with courtesy bagging and carry out, helping hand out produce, or keeping the grocery store well stocked! Volunteers can expect to spend about 2 hours on their feet. Closed toed shoes are required and layered clothing as it can be cold in the warehouse. Opportunities for volunteers who have physical limitations will be provided, and don’t hesitate to ask about that in advance by emailing with your group lead Peggy or Heather at WCFB (heather@whitecenterfoodbank.org).

2 step process to register:

Volunteers must also register with the White Center Food Bank .

Volunteers will receive a confirmation email from the food bank, including parking information as well as some background material on the food bank.

The mission of Backpack Brigade is to end weekend hunger among children in Washington State. With the help of volunteers they deliver over 4,300 bags of food to students at 96 schools each week. All levels are welcome to join! We'll usually have willing teachers available.
Third Place Commons is a casual public space without advance table reservations. We'll choose our tables and play first come, first served, with a limit of 12 players. Bring your Mah Jongg set if you have one!
Food and beverages are also no-host. Bring your own or purchase from the Bakery or other restaurants located in the Commons area.

This Mah Jongg group meets twice monthly, on 1st and 3rd Thursdays (except holidays) from10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

All levels are welcome to join! We'll usually have willing teachers available.
Third Place Commons is a casual public space without advance table reservations. We'll choose our tables and play first come, first served, with a limit of 12 players. Bring your Mah Jongg set if you have one!
Food and beverages are also no-host. Bring your own or purchase from the Bakery or other restaurants located in the Commons area.

Enter the mall on the South/NE 8th side by Phenix Salon Suites & ATI Physical Therapy or on the West/156th side near QFC.

These meets are un-hosted so BYO coffee, drinks, snacks. *It is encouraged to purchase drinks/snacks with the Crossroads vendors as this space is reserved for us without a fee.
